A couple of years ago Auction House Christie’s had a very interesting Rolex for sale. It was a Submariner ref 5514, a model that was made especially for COMEX (Compagnie Maritime d’Expertises). Ref 5514 was never available for the civilian customer.
The Rolex Submariner is a line of diver’s watches from Rolex, introduced in 1953. The Submariner is characterized by a waterproof Oyster case, a self-winding Perpetual movement, a unidirectional rotating bezel with 60-minute graduations, and a water resistance of 300m (1,000 ft). Rolex Submariner ref. 5514 (1975) “This is hugely significant. It’s the sort of thing that collectors go nuts over. Over the decades Sotheby's Rolex specialists have sold hundreds of examples of the iconic Rolex Submariner, ranging from highly functional watches to enjoy daily through to rare examples with extraordinary provenance. The Submariner ref. 5514 housed the Rolex caliber 1520, which also powered the MilSub ref. 5517. However, unlike the 5517, this Comex version did not have an altered bezel insert or a different handset.
A Prototype Rolex Submariner. This particular watch is a vintage Rolex Submariner reference 5513 with a ‘feet first’ matte dial and a fat-font bezel insert.
