Acrylic crystal Rolex General Discussion . I got a scratch on my 5513, took it to central watch in NYC . To me acrylic has an old fashioned charm but there is a reason Rolex moved to sapphire. I wore my first Rolex really hard for 20 years with a sapphire crystal and only ever got some of the nicks on the edge of the crystal. I have to admit the lack of perfection on my Speedmaster hesalite crystal annoys me some. Pretty much only a diamond will scratch the sapphire, so avoid knocking into any diamond rings (seems to be the most common cause of scratches). Polywatch won't do anything to help. Usually crystal replacement is the solution. You can't really polish a sapphire crystal. Rolex uses rare elves to polish the platinum. Certainly the 16750 was/does use an acryllic crystal and ran concurrently with the 16760. Both used a 3xxx movement (albiet the 16750 had a quick-set date feature. The transition on the 16750 from matt dial to gloss WG surrounds seems to have occured about 84-85 putting it right with theintroduction of the 16760.
Acrylic is bigger, thicker and allows more light on the dial. It is just as hard as the sapphire and (i forget) maybe harder. If there is a difference in hardness, it is not great.
